Joining The Great Zet
When I first walked onto campus of Baylor University, I felt compelled to join an organization that would provide an opportunity to extend my leadership skills and abilities, open doors to new relationships, and help me be successful in my college career. But with over 250 groups and organizations present on campus, the task of choosing proved to be quite daunting. It wasn’t until I found myself amidst a crowded “mosaic mixer”, where MGC fraternities and sororities showcased a combination of their identities and culture, that my eyes fell upon the brothers of Delta Epsilon Psi. I was inspired as I watched the unified group of young men perform their roll call fueled by the passion and pride of their brotherhood.  This was the sole moment when I aspired to be one of their fellow brothers.

Delta Epsilon Psi to means brotherhood, discipline and commitment.  Even as a freshmen, Delta Epsilon Psi has played a greater contributing factor to my growth than any of my other college experiences combined. Media and pop culture have inculcated into the general public the common misconception that greek life membership merely translates to insane parties and cute girls. We are all familiar with the famous line from Animal House: “Toga! Toga! “, but as I immersed myself into the life of a member of delta epsilon psi, I saw just how much more it means to be in such a fraternity.

I have learned, with the assistance of my brothers, the value of service - the very essence of putting other’s needs before your own. Together as brothers we take part in a plethora of different service events from reading to children at a local elementary school to building homes for the homeless through Habitat for Humanity. It is these cooperative efforts that display Delta Epsilon Psi’s passion for service. As brothers we try to make the world a better place by making a difference regardless of how small it may be.

Furthermore, I must stand to recognize how much Delta Epsilon Psi has taught me in the realms of discipline and commitment. As a college student, distractions are abundant and around every corner. There are some students who love to partake in every activity imaginable and some who are afraid to even join one.  As a freshman, I can give witness to many who still have not developed the time management and study skills necessary to be successful in college. However, Delta has taught me how to dedicate and commit to my academics and balance my time to handle the rest of my activities ranging from intramural sports, to clubs and academic organizations, and social life. In addition, I have gained, through my brothers, numerous resources to assist my learning in college, with older brothers providing me with study help and advice as well as beneficial counseling to help maneuver my way throughout college.

It is through the emphasized virtues of discipline and commitment that brothers in the fraternity become leaders on campus and later out into the world. Delta Epsilon Psi is a profound resume builder that will immediately help individuals become more marketable to potential employers when they enter the workforce.

Most importantly, the greatest thing I have gained was the sense of brotherhood. As I look around me, I see my brothers. Brothers who will always extend a helping hand when needed, who will give me support to endure times of trials and tribulations, and celebrate with me in times of joy. They would be the first to wish happy birthday, stand by during: graduation, a first job, a wedding, the birth of a child and beyond. They are my greatest friends and at the end of the day, they are the reason why I stand to be a proud member of Delta Epsilon Psi.
