19 Jul Dodging Diabetes by Alpha Kappa Colony
As brothers of Delta Epsilon Psi at Alpha Kappa Colony, we were able to accomplish a long time goal through our Signature Service Event of the year. For the first time ever, we held a 6v6 Dodging Diabetes Tournament here at the University of Illinois at Chicago. It was a very successful event in which we had about 50 participants with much more watching and supporting. We were also able to donate over $3,000 to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) through sponsorships and generous donations from friends and family.
Our goal in the beginning of the year was to host a big event and to donate as much as we can to JDRF. With that in mind, we started our planning process and set the date. We co-hosted the event with Kappa Pi Beta – Beta Chapter not only because both of our philanthropies is to help raise awareness and money for diabetes research but also to reach out to as many people for both participation and support. The event was held on April 3, 2017, and we had people from different backgrounds and organizations come together in a friendly yet competitive dodgeball tournament. To make the tournament more exciting, we added a $180 cash prize for the winning team but all participants went home with a dodging diabetes T-Shirt.
Everyone who came out to the event let us know how much fun they were having and so we hope to make this the first of many Dodging Diabetes Tournaments. It is a fun way to raise awareness and money for a good cause, and we hope to be able to continue donating to JDRF so we can one day find a cure.
